We are recruiting to fill the position below: Job Title: Financial Controller Location: Aba, Abia Reports to: MD / CEO Supervises: Chief Accountant, Cost Controller, Income Auditor, Accounts Payable Officer, Accounts Receivable Officer, Payroll Officer, General Cashier, Store Accountant, Finance Officers, Accounts Assistants, and other Finance Department personnel. Job Summary The role works closely with the General Manager, Department Heads, Internal Audit, Procurement, Human Resources, and external stakeholders to achieve the hotel's financial objectives while maintaining the highest standards of governance and accountability. The Financial Controller leads the Finance Department in preparing accurate financial statements, managing cash flow, optimizing working capital, monitoring budgets, strengthening internal controls, ensuring statutory compliance, and supporting management with financial analysis and business insights. The Financial Controller is responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing all financial management, accounting, budgeting, treasury, taxation, financial reporting, cost control, internal controls, and compliance activities of the hotel. The role ensures the integrity of financial records, safeguards company assets, maintains strong internal controls, supports strategic decisionmaking, and drives financial performance and profitability. Key Responsibilities: Financial Management & Strategic Planning: Support strategic investment and business expansion decisions. Develop and implement financial strategies that support the hotel's business objectives. Monitor the hotel's financial performance and recommend improvement strategies. Ensure sound financial planning and long-term financial sustainability. Advise Management on financial risks and opportunities. Provide strategic financial leadership and advice to Management. Financial Reporting: Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards. Coordinate year-end financial closing activities. Ensure timely preparation of management accounts and financial reports. Present financial reports to Executive Management and the Board where required. Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of all financial records. Analyze financial performance and provide management commentary. Budgeting & Financial Planning: Analyze budget variances and recommend corrective actions. Monitor budget implementation and utilization. Prepare rolling forecasts and financial projections. Coordinate departmental budget preparation and consolidation. Support long-term financial planning initiatives. Lead the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets. Cash Flow & Treasury Management: Monitor daily cash flow and liquidity requirements. Monitor foreign currency transactions where applicable. Ensure adequate working capital for hotel operations. Optimize cash utilization and investment of surplus funds. Manage cash collections, payments, and fund transfers. Oversee banking relationships and treasury activities. Accounting Operations: Maintain accurate accounting records. Supervise month-end and year-end closing processes. Oversee the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, fixed assets, and bank reconciliations. Ensure timely recording of all financial transactions. Review journal entries and accounting adjustments. Ensure proper reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts. Cost Control & Profitability Management: Analyze gross profit margins and recommend strategies to improve profitability. Review menu costing, pricing strategies, and operational cost structures with the Executive Chef and Director of Food & Beverage. Monitor Food Cost, Beverage Cost, Labour Cost, Utility Costs, Housekeeping Costs, Laundry Costs, Engineering Costs, Administrative Costs, and other operational expenses. Review departmental cost reports and profitability analyses prepared by the Cost Controller. Oversee the hotel's cost control function to ensure efficient utilization of financial resources. Support cost optimization initiatives while maintaining service quality. Evaluate departmental financial performance and recommend corrective actions where required. Review operational variances and implement measures to improve financial efficiency. Present cost management reports and profitability analyses to Management Monitor budget compliance across all operational departments. Internal Controls & Financial Governance: Safeguard hotel assets against loss, misuse, and fraud. Review authorization controls and approval limits. Monitor compliance with financial policies and procedures. Ensure segregation of duties and strong internal control procedures. Develop, implement, and maintain effective financial control systems. Strengthen governance and accountability across the Finance Department. Audit & Compliance: Support statutory audits and regulatory inspections. Ensure readiness for periodic financial reviews. Ensure prompt resolution of audit findings and recommendations. Coordinate internal and external audit activities. Maintain compliance with financial reporting standards and applicable legislation. Liaise with auditors and regulatory agencies. Taxation & Statutory Compliance: Ensure compliance with all applicable tax laws and statutory obligations. Monitor changes in tax legislation and advise Management accordingly. Coordinate tax audits and regulatory reviews. Oversee the preparation and submission of VAT, PAYE, Company Income Tax, Withholding Tax, Pension, NSITF, NHF, ITF, and other statutory remittances. Ensure timely payment of statutory obligations. Procurement & Financial Oversight: Verify that purchases are supported by approved Purchase Requisitions (PRs), Purchase Orders (POs), Goods Received Notes (GRNs), supplier invoices, and relevant documentation. Monitor supplier payment performance. Support strategic sourcing initiatives through financial analysis. Ensure procurement activities comply with approved financial policies. Review high-value procurement transactions and payment requests. Risk Management: Develop strategies to mitigate financial and operational risks. Monitor insurance coverage and financial exposure. Identify financial risks affecting hotel operations. Recommend improvements to risk management practices. Support business continuity planning from a financial perspective. Team Leadership & Performance Management: Identify training and development needs. Lead, supervise, mentor, and develop Finance Department personnel. Allocate work effectively across finance functions. Promote teamwork, accountability, and ethical conduct. Support succession planning within the Finance Department. Conduct performance appraisals and coaching sessions. Stakeholder Engagement: Support Board meetings with financial reports and analysis. Maintain strong professional relationships with key stakeholders. Provide financial guidance to operational managers. Liaise with banks, auditors, tax authorities, government agencies, suppliers, and investors. Work closely with the General Manager and Department Heads on financial planning and operational performance. Reporting & Financial Analysis: Develop financial dashboards and management reports. Maintain accurate financial documentation and records. Analyze financial trends, key performance indicators, and profitability. Prepare daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports. Provide recommendations based on financial analysis. Compliance & Continuous Improvement: Ensure compliance with company policies, financial regulations, and accounting standards. Promote continuous improvement within the Finance Department. Keep abreast of developments in accounting standards, taxation, and financial management practices. Drive continuous improvement in financial governance and operational excellence. Recommend automation and technology solutions that improve financial reporting and operational efficiency. Qualifications & Requirement Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related discipline. A Master's Degree (MBA, M.Sc. Finance, or related field) is an added advantage. Experience: At least 5 years in a senior finance leadership role within a reputable luxury hotel, hospitality organization, or internationally branded hotel. 8–12 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience. Extensive experience: in hotel financial reporting, budgeting, cost control, treasury management, and financial analysis. Professional Certifications (Mandatory/Preferred): ICAN (Associate or Fellow). ACCA. ACA. Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) (added advantage).
