We are seeking a highly experienced and commercially astute Senior Legal Counsel. The successful candidate will provide strategic legal support across the company's oil & gas, maritime, and shipping operations, with responsibility for managing legal risk, overseeing litigation and dispute resolution, negotiating high-value commercial transactions, and ensuring compliance with applicable Nigerian and international laws. Key Responsibilities: Litigation & Dispute Resolution: Advise executive management on litigation strategy, settlement negotiations, and legal risk. Handle high-value contractual disputes, debt recovery matters, shipping claims, bunker disputes, and enforcement actions. Manage commercial litigation, arbitration, and regulatory investigations. Coordinate and manage external counsel in Nigeria and international jurisdictions. Lead the company's litigation and dispute resolution strategy. Commercial & Maritime Advisory: Provide legal advice on vessel operations, chartering, bunkering, marine casualties, cargo claims, and ship management. Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on a broad range of commercial and operational agreements. Support vessel acquisitions, financing transactions, and vessel registrations. Liaise with P&I Clubs, marine insurers, surveyors, and international maritime legal advisers. Review charter party disputes and advise on owners' and charterers' rights and obligations. Regulatory Compliance & Cross-Border Transactions: Advise on jurisdiction, governing law, and dispute resolution provisions in commercial agreements. Manage legal aspects of cross-border transactions involving international counterparties. Work with foreign counsel on disputes before English courts, arbitration tribunals, and other international forums. Coordinate legal matters across multiple jurisdictions. Ensure compliance with Nigerian petroleum laws, maritime regulations, and other applicable industry requirements. Corporate Legal Support: Conduct legal research, prepare legal opinions, and provide strategic legal advice to executive management. Monitor regulatory developments impacting the company's operations. Develop and enhance contract management processes and legal documentation. Identify legal risks across the business and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies. Perform other legal duties as assigned in support of business objectives. Requirements: & Qualifications 6–8 years' post-qualification experience: (PQE). Experience: gained from aTier 1 commercial law firm in Nigeria. Strong practice background inOil & Gas, Maritime/Shipping, and Commercial Law. LL.B and B.L qualifications. Qualified Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Experience: managing commercial litigation, arbitration, regulatory investigations, and dispute resolution. Strong knowledge of Nigerian petroleum laws, maritime regulations, and cross-border transactions. Experience: handling English law contracts and London-based disputes or arbitrations is a strong advantage. Demonstrated experience: drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements. Key Competencies: Strong commercial awareness and business acumen. Ability to balance legal risk with commercial objectives. High ethical standards, sound judgment, and professional discretion. Outstanding legal drafting and contract negotiation skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking abilities. Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and interpersonal skills. Strong advocacy, litigation, and dispute management skills. Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams). Experience: using legal research platforms and virtual legal databases.
