We are recruiting to fill the position below: Job Title: Chief Officer Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers Job Category: Deck Position Overview The Chief Engineer is the head of the engineering department and holds complete responsibility for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of all mechanical, electrical, propulsion, and auxiliary systems on board. This includes the oversight of ASD propulsion units, generators, deck machinery, and critical safety systems. The ideal candidate must possess a strong technical background, practical problem-solving ability, and extensive experience: managing engine room operations aboard tugboats or offshore support vessels. Key Responsibilities: Engineering & Propulsion Systems Management: Monitor engine performance parameters and ensure all systems are operating within safety limits. Perform routine checks, troubleshooting, and repairs on all engine room machinery and equipment. Maintain and operate the main engines (typically medium-speed diesel), ASD propulsion units, and auxiliary systems including generators, compressors, pumps, and steering gear. Preventive Maintenance & Repairs: Prepare for and support dry dock or shipyard activities when scheduled. Implement and oversee the Planned Maintenance System (PMS). Conduct fault diagnostics, part replacement, and minor overhauls as needed onboard. Coordinate and execute maintenance schedules for propulsion, fuel, cooling, and lubrication systems. Safety, Compliance & Environmental Control: Manage pollution prevention systems and record oily water separator operations and waste handling. Ensure compliance with all relevant maritime regulations including SOLAS, MARPOL, and flag state engineering codes. Ensure proper functioning of firefighting systems (CO2, extinguishers, fire pumps) and safety equipment within the engine room. Maintain records such as Oil Record Book (ORB), Engine Room Logbook, and maintenance reports. Crew Supervision & Management Lead, train, and supervise the engineering team including 2nd Engineer and Oiler. Assign daily maintenance tasks, monitor performance, and ensure discipline and safety in the engine room. Promote onboard knowledge-sharing and emergency preparedness. Documentation & Reporting: Liaise with the Technical Superintendent for requisitions, parts ordering, and technical reports. Prepare handover notes for crew changes and provide condition assessments for major systems. Maintain accurate logs for engine hours, fuel consumption, lube oil analysis, maintenance activities, and spare parts inventory. Candidate Specification Mandatory Certifications: STCW II/2 – Chief Mate Certificate of Competency (Unlimited or Near Coastal, depending on flag/state). Medical Fitness Certificate (MLC-compliant). Valid STCW Basic Safety Training: PST, FPFF, EFA, PSSR. GMDSS (preferred or as required by vessel). Valid Seaman’s Book and Passport. STCW Advanced Firefighting Certificate. Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ sea time as Chief Officer or Second Mate on ASD tugboats or offshore support vessels. Demonstrated experience: in towing, berthing operations, and harbor assist duties. Familiarity with deck gear handling and emergency towing procedures. Knowledge & Skills: Proficient in navigational equipment: ECDIS, radar, AIS, GPS, gyrocompass, etc. Competent in shipboard safety leadership and toolbox talk facilitation. Strong knowledge of SOLAS, MARPOL, COLREGs, and ISM code. In-depth understanding of tugboat handling, ASD propulsion systems, and tow line dynamics. Attributes & Competencies: High situational awareness and attention to operational risks. Strong leadership and deck team management skills. Excellent communication and coordination skills.
