Its mission is to improve the quality of life through health interventions and related activities that build local capacity in under-served communities worldwide. We are recruiting to fill the position below: Job Title: Medical Doctor - Surgical (National) Location: Katsina Job Summary To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function with or without reasonable accommodation. This role provides general clinical services in inpatient or outpatient areas based on assigned responsibilities. He/she will also be responsible for providing and performing surgical intervention for general surgical cases, obstetric and gynecological cases, and other lifesaving instances. General Clinical Tasks Implement primary/secondary health care package at the respective health facility or mobile clinics with appropriate protocols and procedures in place. Adhere to administrative directives with regards to work schedules, record keeping, patient communications, re-stocking of essential drugs, consumables and other medical supplies. Keep clinical records by properly filling dedicated patient files and maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality. Implement primary/secondary health care package at the respective health facility or mobile clinics with appropriate protocols and procedures in place. Provide high quality clinical care based on analysis of relevant and available patient history/records, appropriate physical examination, available investigations and diagnostic facilities. Promote a culture of learning whereby regular case discussions, lessons-learned and good practices are shared and promoted and documented for institutional memory. Identify any reportable diseases and notify supervisor and local health authorities; assist with outbreak response if needed according to international protocols. Provide inpatient and outpatient services at the supported health facility based on assigned responsibilities. Collect and analyze project and service data to inform and adjust project objectives/plans, strategic choices and quality of care in collaboration with IMC team members, local partners and other relevant staff if required. Monitor disease trends and notify supervisor of any changes in trends which may require adjustment of activities; monitor closely the morbidity and mortality trends together with all the other health indicators. Provide accurate prevention information and/or diagnoses, and treatment including referrals and patient follow-up as per local/internationally accepted standards. Ensure all IPC measures including standard sterilization practices are implemented as per IMC, MoH and WHO standards. Conduct routine and emergency procedures as per individual doctor’s training/certification in outpatient and inpatient departments based on assigned responsibilities: and adhere to local/internationally accepted standards. Work with program staff, health facility staff and auxiliary staff (e.g. CHWs) to provide both didactic and on-the-job training to build capacity and enhance their skills as needed. Act as facility, department or services in charge based on assigned duties. Work with health facility administration to determine the operational needs of the health facility in human resources, training and supplies. Provide health education: to patients and community members concerning their diagnoses, healthy diets, physical activity, hygiene promotion, and disease prevention (such as need for vaccination, etc.) Adhere to international drug usage protocols. Supervise the medical staff to ensure that work is done properly and efficiently. Surgical Care Responsibilities: Conduct daily ward rounds to see pre and post op patients, IPD patients and guide nursing staff on appropriate treatment. Ensure post op orders are followed and patients are pain free following surgeries. Perform other duties as assigned. The duties and responsibilities: listed in this document are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and not necessarily comprehensive. Conduct general surgeries for common cases requiring urgent and emergency intervention such as appendicectomies, obstructed hernias, RTAs, war wounds etc. following IMC policies, guidelines and MoH protocols in consultation with line manager and senior IMC management. Ensure proper organization of the operating theater (OT), availability of equipment and facilities to perform surgeries in a suitable environment. Conduct OPD and evaluate cases requiring surgical care, this may include general surgical care and gynae and obstetric surgical care. Make decisions based on ethical practices and surgical competence to admit and perform procedures or refer cases for advanced further care. Stabilize complex cases arriving in emergency and ensure timely and appropriate referrals. Conduct common obstetrics and gynecology surgeries including lifesaving maternal procedures based on scope of project and work. Conduct trainings needs assessment and arrange training of clinical staff in OT, IPC staff, IPD staff. Ensure surgeries are performed in the presence of trained anesthesia staff. Ensure strict adherence to IPC, aseptic techniques and sterilization of equipment required for surgeries and supervise processes. Job Requirements: Minimum Qualification: Must have at least 3 years’ proven experience: in performing common lifesaving emergency general surgeries, obstetrical and gynecological surgeries. Should have managerial and leadership skills. Typically, a medical Doctor with additional qualification in General Surgery /Obstetrics and Gynecology as required for the position in the country. Willing to work in hardship areas with minimal resources. Experience: in supervising clinical staff in a primary or secondary health care facility. Able to work under stress in harsh environments.
