Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa. We are recruiting to fill the position below: Job Title: Neurosurgeon Location: Abuja, Nigeria Employment Type: Full Time Workplace Type: Onsite Job Purpose This includes contributing to the development of clinical protocols, participating in quality improvement initiatives, and driving clinical research to improve patient outcomes. As a senior member of the medical team, the Neurosurgeon will be a leader in advancing the hospital's neurosurgical capabilities. The Neurosurgeon will be responsible for the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and comprehensive management of disorders affecting the central and peripheral nervous systems, including the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. This role requires a high level of expertise in performing complex cranial and spinal surgeries, such as tumour resections, cerebrovascular interventions, and spinal fusions. Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities: Clinical Practice: Utilise cutting-edge technology, such as intraoperative MRI, neuronavigation, and neurophysiological monitoring, to enhance surgical precision and patient safety. Perform advanced surgical procedures, including craniotomies, neuroendoscopic surgeries, microdiscectomies, spinal fusions, and carotid endarterectomies. Diagnose and surgically treat a wide range of neurosurgical conditions, including brain tumours, traumatic brain injuries, spinal disorders, cerebrovascular diseases, and functional disorders. Provide emergency on-call services for acute neurosurgical presentations, including trauma and stroke. Conduct regular outpatient clinics for pre- and post-operative patient assessments and follow-up care. Patient-Centred Care: Provide clear, thorough, and understandable explanations of diagnoses, treatment options, surgical procedures, and recovery expectations, ensuring informed consent. Deliver empathetic, compassionate, and culturally competent care to patients and their families, often dealing with complex and life-altering diagnoses. Ensure meticulous and timely documentation of patient records, complying with all ethical, legal, and hospital standards. Team Collaboration: Work alongside nursing, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy teams to optimise perioperative, post-operative, and long-term rehabilitative care. Partner with oncologists to develop integrated treatment plans for patients requiring adjuvant chemo- or radiotherapy. Collaborate closely with radiologists to interpret complex imaging (MRI, CT, DSA) and plan image-guided interventions. Participate in and often lead multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings to discuss and plan comprehensive treatment strategies with neurologists, neuroradiologists, neuro-oncologists, and rehabilitation specialists. Education, Leadership and Development: Lead training sessions and workshops on advancements in neurosurgical techniques, patient safety, and critical care management. Support and drive continuous professional development (CPD) initiatives within the department and hospital. Act as a clinical lead for research and innovation within the neurosciences service line. Supervise, mentor, and train junior doctors, residents, and medical students, fostering a culture of learning and clinical excellence. Research and Innovation: Stay current with global advancements in neurosurgery, neuro-oncology, and neurocritical care, actively implementing evidence-based practices. Publish findings in high-impact, peer-reviewed medical journals and present at both national and international professional conferences. Design, lead, and participate in clinical research projects to advance neurosurgical treatments, improve surgical outcomes, and develop innovative approaches to patient care. Compliance and Governance: Actively participate in clinical audits, peer reviews, and governance activities to uphold the highest standards of quality and safety within the department. Ensure strict compliance with infection control measures, patient safety guidelines, and risk management policies. Adhere to all hospital protocols, national healthcare regulations, and international standards of care, including those from the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS). Qualifications Sub-specialty fellowship training in a specific area (e.g., cerebrovascular, neuro-oncology, spinal surgery, or paediatrics) is highly desirable. Track record of developing clinical protocols, leading quality improvement initiatives, and participating in hospital governance committees. A strong portfolio of clinical research, including publications in peer-reviewed journals. Proven experience: in leading and training multidisciplinary surgical teams and mentoring junior medical staff. MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognised institution. Demonstrated expertise in a broad spectrum of complex cranial and spinal procedures. Fellowship in Neurosurgery from a recognised international board or college (e.g., FRCS(SN), EANS, or equivalent). Minimum of 10 years of post-specialisation experience: in neurosurgery, with a proven track record of independent practice in a high-volume, tertiary care setting. Valid medical licence to practice or eligibility for specialist registration in Nigeria.
