We are recruiting to fill the position below: Job Title: Financial Controller Location: Abia Reports to: MD / CEO Job Summary The Financial Controller is responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing all financial management, accounting, budgeting, treasury, taxation, financial reporting, cost control, internal controls, and compliance activities of the hotel. The role ensures the integrity of financial records, safeguards company assets, maintains strong internal controls, supports strategic decisionmaking, and drives financial performance and profitability. The role works closely with the General Manager, Department Heads, Internal Audit, Procurement, Human Resources, and external stakeholders to achieve the hotel's financial objectives while maintaining the highest standards of governance and accountability. The Financial Controller leads the Finance Department in preparing accurate financial statements, managing cash flow, optimizing working capital, monitoring budgets, strengthening internal controls, ensuring statutory compliance, and supporting management with financial analysis and business insights. Key Responsibilities: Financial Management & Strategic Planning: Provide strategic financial leadership and advice to Management. Ensure sound financial planning and long-term financial sustainability. Develop and implement financial strategies that support the hotel's business objectives. Support strategic investment and business expansion decisions. Monitor the hotel's financial performance and recommend improvement strategies. Advise Management on financial risks and opportunities. Financial Reporting: Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of all financial records. Ensure timely preparation of management accounts and financial reports. Analyze financial performance and provide management commentary. Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards. Present financial reports to Executive Management and the Board where required. Coordinate year-end financial closing activities. Budgeting & Financial Planning: Coordinate departmental budget preparation and consolidation. Lead the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets. Support long-term financial planning initiatives. Prepare rolling forecasts and financial projections. Analyze budget variances and recommend corrective actions. Monitor budget implementation and utilization. Cash Flow & Treasury Management: Monitor foreign currency transactions where applicable. Ensure adequate working capital for hotel operations. Oversee banking relationships and treasury activities. Manage cash collections, payments, and fund transfers. Optimize cash utilization and investment of surplus funds. Monitor daily cash flow and liquidity requirements. Accounting Operations: Review journal entries and accounting adjustments. Oversee the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, fixed assets, and bank reconciliations. Ensure timely recording of all financial transactions. Ensure proper reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts. Supervise month-end and year-end closing processes. Maintain accurate accounting records. Cost Control & Profitability Management: Oversee the hotel's cost control function to ensure efficient utilization of financial resources. Monitor Food Cost, Beverage Cost, Labour Cost, Utility Costs, Housekeeping Costs, Laundry Costs, Engineering Costs, Administrative Costs, and other operational expenses. Support cost optimization initiatives while maintaining service quality. Analyze gross profit margins and recommend strategies to improve profitability. Monitor budget compliance across all operational departments. Review departmental cost reports and profitability analyses prepared by the Cost Controller. Evaluate departmental financial performance and recommend corrective actions where required. Present cost management reports and profitability analyses to Management Review operational variances and implement measures to improve financial efficiency. Review menu costing, pricing strategies, and operational cost structures with the Executive Chef and Director of Food & Beverage. Internal Controls & Financial Governance: Safeguard hotel assets against loss, misuse, and fraud. Strengthen governance and accountability across the Finance Department. Develop, implement, and maintain effective financial control systems. Monitor compliance with financial policies and procedures. Review authorization controls and approval limits. Ensure segregation of duties and strong internal control procedures. Audit & Compliance: Coordinate internal and external audit activities. Maintain compliance with financial reporting standards and applicable legislation. Ensure prompt resolution of audit findings and recommendations. Ensure readiness for periodic financial reviews. Liaise with auditors and regulatory agencies. Support statutory audits and regulatory inspections. Taxation & Statutory Compliance: Ensure compliance with all applicable tax laws and statutory obligations. Coordinate tax audits and regulatory reviews. Monitor changes in tax legislation and advise Management accordingly. Ensure timely payment of statutory obligations. Oversee the preparation and submission of VAT, PAYE, Company Income Tax, Withholding Tax, Pension, NSITF, NHF, ITF, and other statutory remittances. Procurement & Financial Oversight: Ensure procurement activities comply with approved financial policies. Monitor supplier payment performance. Verify that purchases are supported by approved Purchase Requisitions (PRs), Purchase Orders (POs), Goods Received Notes (GRNs), supplier invoices, and relevant documentation. Review high-value procurement transactions and payment requests. Support strategic sourcing initiatives through financial analysis. Risk Management: Monitor insurance coverage and financial exposure. Identify financial risks affecting hotel operations. Recommend improvements to risk management practices. Support business continuity planning from a financial perspective. Develop strategies to mitigate financial and operational risks. Team Leadership & Performance Management: Conduct performance appraisals and coaching sessions. Support succession planning within the Finance Department. Lead, supervise, mentor, and develop Finance Department personnel. Allocate work effectively across finance functions. Identify training and development needs. Promote teamwork, accountability, and ethical conduct. Stakeholder Engagement: Work closely with the General Manager and Department Heads on financial planning and operational performance. Liaise with banks, auditors, tax authorities, government agencies, suppliers, and investors. Provide financial guidance to operational managers. Support Board meetings with financial reports and analysis. Maintain strong professional relationships with key stakeholders. Reporting & Financial Analysis: Maintain accurate financial documentation and records. Analyze financial trends, key performance indicators, and profitability. Provide recommendations based on financial analysis. Prepare daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports. Develop financial dashboards and management reports. Compliance & Continuous Improvement: Ensure compliance with company policies, financial regulations, and accounting standards. Drive continuous improvement in financial governance and operational excellence. Recommend automation and technology solutions that improve financial reporting and operational efficiency. Promote continuous improvement within the Finance Department. Keep abreast of developments in accounting standards, taxation, and financial management practices. Qualifications & Requirement Education: A Master's Degree (MBA, M.Sc. Finance, or related field) is an added advantage. Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related discipline. Experience: Minimum of 8–12 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience. At least 5 years in a senior finance leadership role within a reputable luxury hotel, hospitality organization, or internationally branded hotel. Extensive experience: in hotel financial reporting, budgeting, cost control, treasury management, and financial analysis. Professional Certifications (Mandatory/Preferred): Certified Management Accountant (CMA) (added advantage). Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) (added advantage). ACCA. ACA. ICAN (Associate or Fellow).
