We are recruiting to fill the position below: Job Title: Second Engineer Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers Job Category: Engine Room Position Overview The ideal candidate will possess hands-on engineering experience: with diesel engines, generator sets, pumps, and preferably ASD propulsion units, with a proactive approach to maintenance and troubleshooting. The 2nd Engineer is the second-in-command within the engine department and directly supports the Chief Engineer in managing the tugboat’s mechanical and electrical systems. This role requires technical competence, attention to detail, and the ability to ensure continuous operation of propulsion, auxiliary, and support systems—especially in the demanding conditions of offshore towing, harbor assist, and berthing operations. Key Responsibilities: Machinery Operations & Monitoring: Operate and monitor the tugboat’s main propulsion engines, ASD units, generators, bilge systems, and auxiliary machinery. Conduct regular system checks and inspections to ensure optimal performance and identify irregularities early. Record key parameters such as pressures, temperatures, fuel/lube oil levels, and generator loads. Preventive Maintenance & Repairs: Perform lubrication, filter changes, pump servicing, and replacement of worn-out components. Troubleshoot minor machinery breakdowns and assist with emergency mechanical repairs at sea. Assist in executing the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) and report completed maintenance tasks to the Chief Engineer. Safety, Compliance & Environmental Practices: Follow environmental protection procedures in compliance with MARPOL regulations (bilge discharge, OWS, incinerator use). Assist in ensuring all engine room operations are conducted with strict adherence to safety procedures and PPE usage. Participate in emergency drills and maintain readiness for fire, flooding, and system failure incidents. Technical Support & Documentation: Maintain accurate engine room logs and assist in preparing technical reports. Support the Chief Engineer in spare parts inventory control and ordering. Ensure cleanliness, orderliness, and hazard-free condition of the engine room. Team Collaboration: Supervise Oiler and Engine Ratings under the Chief Engineer’s direction. Provide training and hands-on instruction where necessary. Report promptly to the Chief Engineer on any irregularities or potential issues. Candidate Specification Mandatory Certifications: STCW Basic Safety Training (PST, FPFF, EFA, PSSR). Valid Seafarer’s Medical Certificate (MLC-compliant). Valid Passport & Seaman’s Book. STCW III/2 or III/1 – Second Engineer Certificate of Competency (based on engine power class). STCW Advanced Firefighting Certificate. Experience: Familiarity with: Hydraulic deck machinery and pumps Fuel, lube, and bilge systems Diesel engines and propulsion units Generator and electrical systems Experience: working on ASD tugboats, offshore support vessels, or coastal tugs is highly desirable. Minimum 2–3 years of sea time in engine department roles, with at least 1 year as a qualified 2nd Engineer or equivalent. Knowledge & Skills: Good understanding of engine room layout, emergency operations, and automation systems. Competency in handling tools, performing technical diagnostics, and conducting routine maintenance. Knowledge of MARPOL, SOLAS, and ISM Code engineering standards.
