The role will ensure compliance with applicable HSE legislation, company policies, food safety requirements, and industry best practices while promoting a strong safety culture and reducing workplace risks, incidents, and environmental impacts. The HSE Officer will support the implementation and continuous improvement of MATNA Foods’ Health, Safety and Environmental management systems across manufacturing, warehouse, logistics, and other operational areas. Key Responsibilities: Promote safe chemical handling, storage, labelling, and disposal practices in line with approved procedures. Implement and monitor HSE policies, procedures, standards, and safe work practices across operational locations. Support environmental management initiatives covering waste management, pollution prevention, chemical handling, energy conservation, and responsible resource utilisation. Collaborate with Production, Engineering, Quality Assurance, Warehouse, Logistics, and HR teams to address HSE risks. Support compliance with food safety, hygiene, quality, and regulatory requirements: applicable to food manufacturing operations. Conduct HSE inductions, toolbox talks, safety training, emergency drills, and awareness programmes for employees and contractors. Investigate workplace incidents, near misses, unsafe acts, and unsafe conditions and support root-cause analysis. Conduct regular workplace inspections, risk assessments, Job Safety Analysis (JSA), and safety audits. Participate in internal and external HSE audits and support implementation of audit recommendations. Monitor compliance with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), permit-to-work, lockout/tagout, housekeeping, and other safety requirements. Maintain accurate HSE records, incident reports, inspection reports, and compliance documentation. Provide regular HSE performance reports, highlighting key risks, incidents, trends, and improvement opportunities. Identify hazards and recommend practical corrective and preventive actions. Qualifications Practical experience: in risk assessment, incident investigation, workplace inspections, emergency preparedness, and HSE training. Professional HSE certification such as NEBOSH, IOSH, NISP, or equivalent is an advantage. Knowledge of ISO 45001, ISO 14001, HACCP, GMP, and food safety principles is an advantage. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and standard HSE reporting tools. Strong report-writing, documentation, communication, and analytical skills. Working knowledge of Nigerian HSE legislation, regulatory requirements, and relevant international safety standards. Bachelor’s Degree or HND in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Engineering, Industrial Safety, Science, or a related discipline. 2–4 years’ relevant HSE experience, preferably within FMCG, food manufacturing, agro-processing, manufacturing, or industrial operations.
