We are recruiting to fill the position below: Job Title: Laboratory Scientist Location: Agungi Lekki, Lagos Reports to: Laboratory Manager Department: Medical Laboratory Summary The outcome of their research informs the medical practice and procedure and can help to tackle major diseases. They study samples obtained from the human body. The Laboratory Scientist will be part of the Laboratory operations team, involved in lab-based tasks such as sampling, testing and measuring in the field of medicine. Essential Function of the job To observe all relevant health and safety regulations. To participate in annual performance and developmental appraisals and agree on personal targets and objectives in line with line manager. Examining and analyzing body fluids and cells to look for bacteria, parasites and other microorganisms. To support the lab’s quality management systems by ensuring that working practice is in line with ISO standards and/or other relevant accreditations. Keeping accurate records and writing reports. To accurately record data, write reports and share the results. Relaying accurate results to relevant medical staff who in turn uses the information to diagnose and treat the patient. Using microscopes, cell counters and other sophisticated laboratory equipments To assist the sample receipt team with the accessioning of samples, if required To perform routine and specialist analytical testing on a range of biological samples. To identify blood groups and cross match them for transfusions. To assist in the supervision of and mentoring of trainee scientists and other support staffs when required. Assists in the production of and updating of laboratory documentation, particularly relating to policies and standard operating procedures. Ensuring service is provided in an accurate, efficient and cost-effective manner. To analyze data and interpret results. Monitoring the effects of medication by testing how a patient reacts and is responding to treatment. Analyzing the chemicals reactions to determine concentrations of compounds such as blood glucose and cholesterol levels. Educational: To take responsibility for your continuing professional development (CPD)by actively reviewing and participating in different projects for continuing professional development to be agreed by line manager. Perform other duties as assigned. Maintaining and updating professional knowledge and taking responsibility for continuing professional development. (CPD) Qualifications A Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences. Minimum of two years post qualification laboratory experience: across most departments in laboratory sciences. Membership or eligibility for membership of the Association of Medical Laboratory Science (AMLS) Ability to work unsupervised as well as working as part of a team. Skills and abilities: A systematic approach to tasks and the ability to follow instructions and set procedures. A desire to contribute to patient care and treatment. A responsible and mature approach to their work. Aptitude for biology and chemistry. Accuracy, with good attention to detail. Ability to work as part of a team as well as to supervise junior workers in the laboratory. Excellent IT skills. Patience, decisiveness and meticulousness.
