We are recruiting to fill the position below: Job Title: UT Level 2 Technician – Pipe Mill Location: Lagos Work Mode: Full-Time | Onsite Industry: Steel & MiningIndustry Job Summary Working within a pipe mill environment, you will operate both automated ultrasonic testing (AUT) systems and manual equipment to detect internal, surface, and subsurface defects, ensuring all products comply with strict international pipeline standards(EN10893-11) before shipment. The UT Level 2 Technician is responsible for performing, interpreting, and managing ultrasonic testing inspections on steel pipes during or after the manufacturing process. Core Responsibilities: Inspection & Process Control: Manual Verification: Perform manual UT scans to verify, map, and double-check indications flagged by automated production line scanners. Calibration: Calibrate UT equipment, transducers, and automated systems daily using specific pipe mill reference standards (notched or drilled calibration pipes). AUT Operation: Monitor, setup, and run Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) systems integrated into the pipe production lines. Defect Analysis: Inspect pipe body, weld seams (, SAW, LSAW, or FCAW), and pipe ends (bevels) for laminations, cracks, porosity, lack of fusion, and wall thickness variations. Evaluation & Reporting: Documentation: Generate and sign off on official UT inspection reports, entering quality data into the mill's Manufacturing Execution System (MES) or ERP. Dispositioning: Formally accept or reject pipes based on code criteria, and clearly mark defect locations for the repair or crop stations. Compliance Checks: Evaluate inspection data against pipe manufacturing codes and customer specifications (e.g., API 5L, ASTM, ASME, ISO 3183). Leadership & Quality Assurance: Audit Support: Assist Quality Engineers during third-party customer audits or witness inspections by agencies like Lloyd's, DNV, or ABS. Supervision: Oversee and provide technical guidance to UT Level 1 operators and scanner attendants on the mill floor. Requirements: Certifications (Mandatory): Preferred: Additional Level 2 certifications in Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) for pipe end inspections. Visual Fitness: Must pass an annual vision examination (Jaeger 1 and Ishihara color blindness test). VT Level 2 certification in accordance with ISO 9712(PCN/CSIWP) UT Level 2 Certification: Valid certification in accordance with ISO 9712 (PCN/CSWIP) Experience: & Knowledge: Standards Expertise: Deep familiarity with API Spec 5L line pipe and EN10219 specifications and related NDT standards (e.g., ISO 10893). Weld Inspection: Strong background in inspecting heavy-wall longitudinal or helical submerged arc welds (SAW) Pipe Mill Experience: 2–3 years of experience: specifically within a pipe manufacturing mill or heavy steel tube manufacturing facility. Key Skills: Technical Aptitude: Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electronic issues on automated scanning rigs. Data Literacy: Capable of reading complex computerized UT data streams, strip charts, and digital imaging. Industrial Stamina: Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-volume manufacturing plant environment. Working Conditions Safety-first mindset is critical due to heavy overhead cranes, moving pipe conveyors, and automated machinery.
