We are recruiting to fill the position below: Job Title: Oiler Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers Job Category: Engine Room Position Overview An ideal candidate should have a mechanical background, a strong safety mindset, and practical experience: working in an engine room environment aboard a tugboat or offshore support vessel. The Oiler is an essential member of the engine department, supporting the engineering team with the operation, cleaning, lubrication, and maintenance of all onboard machinery. The role ensures that mechanical systems run smoothly and that equipment is ready for all operational demands during towing, berthing, and offshore duties. Key Responsibilities: Machinery Operation Support: Check and top up lubricating oils, coolants, and hydraulic fluids as directed by the 2nd or Chief Engineer. Assist in monitoring and operating propulsion engines, generators, compressors, fuel systems, and auxiliary machinery. Take readings of temperature, pressure, RPMs, and fluid levels at scheduled intervals and record in engine room logs. Lubrication & Routine Maintenance: Perform daily lubrication of moving parts such as bearings, pumps, valves, and motors to prevent wear and overheating. Assist in replacing filters, seals, and minor components as part of preventive maintenance. Clean strainers, check belts, and assist with fuel transfer or bunkering operations. Engine Room Housekeeping: Dispose of oily rags and waste materials safely and in accordance with MARPOL regulations. Keep engine room, workshops, bilge areas, and storerooms clean, dry, and free of obstructions. Maintain proper storage and labeling of tools, oils, and chemicals. Safety & Emergency Response: Wear appropriate PPE at all times and comply with safety standards for confined spaces and hot surfaces. Participate in safety drills and be familiar with muster stations, firefighting systems, and engine room escape routes. Understand emergency shutdown procedures and assist in engine room firefighting if required. Candidate Specification Mandatory Certifications: STCW Basic Safety Training (PST, FPFF, EFA, PSSR). Seafarer’s Medical Certificate (MLC-compliant). STCW III/4 – Engine Rating Certificate or Oiler Endorsement. Valid International Passport & Seaman’s Book. Experience: Minimum 1–2 years of experience: in an engine room capacity on tugboats, offshore vessels, or cargo ships. Familiarity with: Emergency power systems. Watchkeeping and recording logs Diesel engines and auxiliary machinery Bilge and fuel transfer systems Knowledge & Skills: Basic understanding of engine room terminology and machinery layout. Ability to use basic tools and assist in mechanical repairs. Working knowledge of engine room safety protocols and MARPOL pollution prevention measures. Sound understanding of lubrication schedules and machinery upkeep. Attributes & Competencies: High safety awareness and sense of responsibility. Strong teamwork ethic and willingness to learn from senior engineers. Physically fit for engine room conditions including heat, noise, and confined spaces. Reliable, disciplined, and detail-oriented.
