The Credit Officer is expected to balance business growth with prudent credit risk management, ensuring that quality lending decisions contribute to the Bank's profitability while minimising portfolio risk. The role involves evaluating customers' creditworthiness, conducting due diligence, recommending suitable credit facilities, monitoring loan portfolios and supporting effective recovery of outstanding facilities. The Credit Officer is responsible for assessing, processing, and monitoring credit applications to ensure that loans granted by Rex Microfinance Bank Limited are appropriately evaluated, properly documented, and managed in line with the Bank's credit policies, risk appetite, and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities: Credit Assessment & Appraisal: Prepare comprehensive credit appraisal reports and recommendations for approval. Analyse applicants' income, cash flow, financial position, repayment capacity and existing obligations. Identify key credit risks and mitigating factors. Conduct customer due diligence and verify information provided by applicants. Review credit history and other relevant credit information. Conduct detailed credit assessments of individuals, businesses and other eligible borrowers. Receive and review loan applications and supporting documentation. Assess the purpose and viability of proposed loans. Loan Processing & Documentation: Ensure all required documentation is complete and accurate before loan disbursement. Maintain accurate and up-to-date credit files and records. Confirm that approved loan terms are consistent with the Bank's credit policies. Ensure appropriate security/collateral documentation is obtained where applicable. Coordinate with relevant departments to facilitate timely loan processing and disbursement. Credit Monitoring & Portfolio Management: Conduct periodic reviews of existing borrowers in line with the Bank's requirements. Prepare regular reports on portfolio performance, arrears and emerging credit risks. Track loan maturity dates, repayment schedules, arrears and delinquent accounts. Monitor the quality and performance of the assigned loan portfolio. Monitor assigned loan accounts and customer repayment performance. Identify early warning signs of potential default and escalate appropriately. Loan Recovery & Collections: Work with the Recovery/Collections team where applicable to improve loan recovery rates. Maintain accurate records of collection activities and recovery efforts. Escalate persistent or high-risk delinquent accounts to the appropriate authority. Support the implementation of recovery strategies for non-performing loans. Follow up with customers on outstanding and overdue loan repayments. Contact delinquent customers and agree appropriate repayment arrangements within approved guidelines. Customer Relationship Management: Respond promptly to customer enquiries relating to credit facilities. Identify suitable lending opportunities while ensuring compliance with the Bank's credit standards. Support customer retention and responsible lending practices. Provide customers with clear information on loan products, terms, repayment obligations and requirements. Maintain professional relationships with borrowers and prospective customers. Risk Management & Compliance: Adhere to applicable regulatory and internal requirements: relating to lending and credit management. Identify and report suspected fraud, misrepresentation or unusual customer activity. Ensure proper segregation of duties and adherence to approval limits. Maintain confidentiality of customer and Bank information. Escalate material credit risks and policy exceptions promptly. Ensure all credit activities comply with the Bank's approved credit policies and procedures. Reporting & Analysis: Maintain accurate credit databases and records. Provide management with relevant insights on portfolio quality and emerging risks. Track key credit indicators including portfolio at risk, delinquency, repayment rates and non-performing loans. Analyse trends in customer repayment behaviour and recommend appropriate actions. Qualifications & Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years' relevant experience: in credit analysis, lending, loan monitoring, microfinance or commercial banking. Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel and relevant banking/credit management systems. Experience: in evaluating individual and/or SME loan applications is an advantage. Good understanding of credit assessment and loan portfolio management. Professional qualification or relevant certification in banking, credit management, risk management or finance is an advantage. Bachelor's Degree or HND in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration or a related discipline. Strong numerical and analytical skills.
