We are recruiting to fill the position below: Job Title: Master Captain Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers Job Category: Deck Position Overview The ideal candidate must demonstrate strong leadership, exceptional ship handling skills (especially with ASD propulsion), solid understanding of maritime law, and an unwavering commitment to safety and compliance. The Master (Captain) is the highest-ranking officer onboard and holds full command of the vessel. The Master is responsible for the safe, lawful, and efficient operation of the ASD tugboat and the performance, welfare, and discipline of all crew members onboard. This role is critical in supporting port operations, towing assignments, berthing/unberthing of tankers or vessels, and offshore logistics. Key Responsibilities: Navigation & Vessel Operations: Exercise full command of the tugboat during operations including towing, harbor assist, escort duties, berthing/unberthing, and offshore support. Plan and execute safe passage, including route planning, weather assessments, and traffic monitoring using modern navigation systems (ECDIS, AIS, Radar, GPS). Ensure proper use of ASD controls for efficient and precise maneuvering under various sea and port conditions. Compliance & Safety Management: Ensure vessel operations are in full compliance with international maritime regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, COLREGs), flag state requirements, and company SMS (Safety Management System). Conduct and supervise emergency drills (fire, man overboard, abandon ship, etc.) as per ISM Code. Maintain readiness for Port State Control (PSC), vetting, or terminal inspections. Ensure crew compliance with PPE usage, safety procedures, and onboard risk assessments. Crew Leadership & Human Resource Management: Oversee the Watchkeeping arrangements and ensure STCW rest hour compliance is maintained. Ensure crew welfare, discipline, and resolve conflicts where necessary. Supervise, guide, and motivate all crew members onboard, promoting a culture of professionalism, teamwork, and accountability. Conduct crew briefings, performance appraisals, and training in alignment with company expectations. Administrative & Operational Reporting: Maintain and sign official ship documents including logbooks, oil records, cargo/towing records, and ISM reports. Report defects, incidents, near misses, and voyage performance through company reporting platforms. Liaise with company shore-side teams, pilots, agents, terminals, and port authorities on all operational matters. Technical & Emergency Oversight: Collaborate with the Chief Engineer to ensure all systems critical to vessel operations (propulsion, steering, towing winch, firefighting equipment) are maintained. Take command during onboard emergency situations until the incident is resolved or safely escalated. Ensure that firefighting, lifesaving, and navigation equipment are functional and inspected as per schedule. Candidate Specification Mandatory Certifications: Valid STCW Basic Training (PST, FPFF, EFA, PSSR). STCW II/2 – Master (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency or Tugboat Endorsement (limited to vessel size/type where applicable). Medical Fitness Certificate (MLC-compliant). Seaman’s Book and International Passport. Valid GMDSS General Operator’s Certificate. Experience: Minimum of 5 years of command experience: on ASD tugboats, terminal tugs, or offshore towing vessels. Proven experience: in: Harbor assist and escort operations. Emergency towing and rescue readiness. Offshore supply/support and barge handling. Knowledge & Skills: High proficiency in bridge equipment and electronic navigation systems (ECDIS, Radar, AIS, etc.). Skilled in emergency command decision-making and onboard crisis leadership. Fluent in English – verbal and written communication. Strong knowledge of international maritime conventions, port operations, and safety protocols. Expert understanding of ASD propulsion systems and dynamic maneuvering techniques. Attributes & Competencies: Leadership presence and authority. Organized and meticulous in reporting and recordkeeping. Decisive and calm under pressure. Cross-cultural sensitivity and interpersonal skills in managing diverse crews.
