The role ensures that mechanical works are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, quality standards, project schedules, budgets, and applicable regulatory requirements. The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the planning, design coordination, supervision, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of mechanical systems and equipment on construction projects. Key Responsibilities: Mechanical Design & Technical Review: Identify design conflicts and recommend practical technical solutions. Review shop drawings, material submittals, equipment schedules, and technical proposals. Interpret and coordinate mechanical designs with architectural, structural, electrical, and civil works. Review mechanical drawings, designs, specifications, BOQs, and project requirements. Ensure mechanical installations are suitable for the intended application and project requirements. Project Planning & Execution: Coordinate mechanical works with other project disciplines. Assist in developing work plans, method statements, and installation procedures. Plan and coordinate mechanical activities in line with the approved project programme. Supervise the execution of mechanical works and ensure timely completion. Ensure resources required for mechanical works are available when needed. Monitor progress against approved schedules and report potential delays. Site Supervision: Ensure mechanical installations are executed in accordance with approved drawings and specifications. Provide technical guidance to site personnel and contractors. Inspect workmanship and identify defective or non-compliant works. Supervise contractors, subcontractors, technicians, and mechanical personnel. Monitor installation of HVAC systems, plumbing systems, pumps, generators, fire protection systems, mechanical equipment, and other applicable systems. Ensure proper sequencing and coordination of mechanical activities. Quality Assurance & Control: Minimise defects, installation errors, and rework. Prepare and coordinate mechanical testing and commissioning activities. Ensure mechanical works comply with approved quality standards and specifications. Ensure defects identified during testing and commissioning are promptly resolved. Verify system performance against approved design requirements. Review Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), checklists, and quality documentation. Coordinate commissioning activities with electrical, civil, architectural, and other project teams. Support preparation of commissioning records and handover documentation. Supervise testing of installed mechanical systems and equipment. Conduct inspections and coordinate testing of mechanical installations. Identify non-conformities and ensure timely corrective actions. Verify that mechanical materials and equipment meet approved specifications. Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance: Promote safe working practices among contractors and site personnel. Ensure safe installation, operation, and handling of mechanical equipment. Ensure all mechanical activities comply with company and project HSE requirements. Identify and report hazards, incidents, and unsafe practices. Participate in risk assessments, toolbox meetings, safety inspections, and permit-to-work processes. Materials, Equipment & Resource Management: Prepare mechanical material and equipment requirements. Coordinate with Procurement and Stores to ensure timely availability of required materials. Review and verify delivered materials and equipment against approved specifications. Monitor proper storage, handling, and utilisation of mechanical materials. Minimise material wastage and prevent damage or misuse of project resources. Contractor & Stakeholder Management: Attend project coordination and technical meetings. Monitor contractor performance and ensure timely resolution of technical issues. Monitor mechanical contractors and subcontractors to ensure compliance with project requirements. Review contractors' work programmes and progress. Liaise with consultants, clients, suppliers, and other stakeholders on mechanical matters. Cost & Variation Management: Recommend cost-effective mechanical solutions without compromising quality or safety. Identify potential variations and additional works and report them promptly. Support the Quantity Surveyor in reviewing mechanical quantities and variations. Minimise rework, material wastage, and unnecessary project expenditure. Monitor mechanical works against approved budgets and scope. Documentation & Reporting: Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports on mechanical activities. Maintain updated mechanical drawings and documentation. Support preparation of as-built drawings, operation manuals, warranties, and handover documents. Maintain records of inspections, testing, commissioning, material approvals, and technical submissions. Prepare and track RFIs, inspection requests, snag lists, and technical queries. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Reduction in mechanical defects and rework. Contractor/subcontractor performance against approved programmes. Percentage of mechanical works completed within approved project timelines. Timely completion of mechanical testing and commissioning. Client and consultant satisfaction with mechanical works. Successful completion of mechanical systems within approved cost and quality requirements. Timely closure of mechanical snags and non-conformities. Timely submission of project reports and technical documentation. Compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and applicable standards. Compliance with HSE requirements: and reduction in mechanical-related incidents. Efficient utilisation of materials, equipment, labour, and other resources. Qualifications & Experience: Proficiency in AutoCAD and other relevant engineering/design software. Proven experience: in building, infrastructure, industrial, commercial, or residential construction projects. Professional certification/membership such as COREN, NSE, or other relevant professional body is an added advantage. Bachelor's Degree or HND in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. Minimum of 5 years' relevant experience: in mechanical engineering within the construction industry. Strong knowledge of mechanical construction, installation, testing, and commissioning. Knowledge of relevant mechanical, building, environmental, and HSE standards.
