Position Summary

The Accountant is responsible for the day-to-day financial and accounting operations of the Maiduguri Branch, ensuring accurate bookkeeping, timely reporting, and strict compliance with company policy and statutory requirements.

The role safeguards branch cash and assets, supports budgeting and cost control, and acts as the key financial liaison between the branch and Head Office, ensuring the branch's accounts are audit-ready at all times.

Key Responsibilities

  • Bookkeeping & Financial Records:
  • Ensure all financial transactions are properly authorised, documented, and filed in line with company policy.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date books of account for the branch, including ledgers, journals, and supporting schedules.
  • Post and reconcile daily financial transactions, including sales, purchases, receipts, and payments.
  • Cash & Bank Management:
  • Manage branch petty cash, ensuring proper authorisation, documentation, and replenishment.
  • Monitor branch cash flow and escalate shortfalls or irregularities promptly.
  • Prepare and perform daily/weekly bank reconciliations for all branch accounts.
  • Ensure cash and cheques are banked promptly and securely in line with company procedure.
  • Reporting:
  • Support the preparation of the branch's annual budget and monitor actual performance against it.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts, including income statements, balance sheet items, and variance analysis for the branch.
  • Prepare periodic (daily, weekly, monthly) branch financial reports for submission to Head Office.
  • Payables, Receivables & Inventory:
  • Process supplier invoices and staff expense claims for the branch, ensuring accuracy and appropriate approval.
  • Support periodic stocktakes and reconcile branch inventory records with financial accounts, where applicable.
  • Monitor and follow up on outstanding receivables/debtors for the branch.
  • Compliance & Internal Controls:
  • Identify and escalate control weaknesses or compliance risks at branch level.
  • Ensure branch financial operations comply with company policies, accounting standards, and relevant statutory/tax regulations.
  • Support internal and external audit exercises by providing accurate records and responding to audit queries.
  • Payroll & Statutory Remittances:
  • Support branch-level payroll input and verification, working with Head Office HR/Finance as required.
  • Assist with the computation and timely remittance of statutory deductions (e.g. PAYE, pension) for branch staff, where applicable.
  • Stakeholder Liaison:
  • Respond to finance queries from branch staff and customers in a professional and timely manner.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for finance-related matters at the branch, liaising with the Branch Manager, Head Office Finance team, vendors, and customers.
  • Person Specification

Education

Bachelor's Degree (HND or BSc) in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field.

Professional accounting qualification (e.g. ICAN, ACCA) obtained or in progress is an advantage.

Experience

Minimum of 2–4 years' relevant accounting/bookkeeping experience, ideally in a branch or retail finance environment.

Prior exposure to statutory compliance and tax remittance processes in Nigeria is an advantage.

Salary: N500,000 - N1,000,000 per month.
