Summary
The BSS Engineer will be responsible for the field operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, fault restoration, installation, commissioning, and deployment of RAN, Microwave (MW), transmission, and associated telecom equipment.
The role requires strong hands-on troubleshooting skills, the ability to isolate and resolve technical faults independently, and the flexibility to work at field sites, including during critical outages and outside normal working hours.
Key Responsibilities
- RAN / eNodeB Fault Management:
- Confirm service recovery with the NOC and provide detailed fault-resolution feedback.
- Troubleshoot and restore eNodeB/RAN faults at telecom sites.
- Use equipment alarms, indicators, OSS/NMS information, and field diagnostics to identify faults.
- Diagnose BTS, BBU, RRU/RRH, CPRI/eCPRI, S1 connectivity, transmission interface, and cell outage issues.
- Perform hardware replacement, configuration checks, and post-restoration testing.
- Microwave & Transmission Troubleshooting:
- Perform basic MW link alignment and configuration.
- Monitor parameters including RSL, BER, modulation, SNR, and link capacity.
- Isolate faults relating to equipment, alignment, power, cabling, or transmission configuration.
- Inspect and troubleshoot MW radios, antennas, ODU/IDU, cables, connectors, and Ethernet interfaces.
- Troubleshoot MW link failures, link-down issues, low RSL, high BER, synchronization, and capacity problems.
- Coordinate with NOC/transmission teams for end-to-end fault restoration.
- Site Deployment & Commissioning:
- Participate in the installation and deployment of new RAN and MW sites.
- Perform equipment power-up, initial configuration, connectivity checks, and integration.
- Support eNodeB integration with the live network and MW link commissioning/alignment.
- Install and verify BBU, RRU, MW equipment, antennas, cables, and associated equipment.
- Conduct site integration, functionality testing, pre-acceptance checks, and site acceptance activities.
- Preventive & Corrective Maintenance:
- Carry appropriate tools, spares, and test equipment to support first-time fault resolution.
- Respond to critical and non-critical faults within agreed SLAs.
- Escalate complex technical issues to the NOC, OEM/TAC, or specialist teams when required.
- Identify potential failures and recommend corrective actions.
- Inspect equipment, cables, connectors, antennas, grounding, and general site conditions.
- Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance on RAN, MW, power, and associated telecom equipment.
- Replace defective equipment and restore affected services.
- Power & Site Infrastructure:
- Identify power-related causes of RAN/MW equipment outages.
- Coordinate with relevant teams on major power, environmental, or site-infrastructure issues.
- Check grounding and physical installation conditions.
- Perform basic troubleshooting of telecom DC power systems.
- Check rectifiers, batteries, breakers, distribution panels, and DC voltage.
- NOC & Vendor Coordination:
- Work closely with the NOC during fault investigation and restoration.
- Support software upgrades and other technical maintenance activities.
- Confirm service restoration and ticket closure with the NOC.
- Coordinate with OEM/vendor engineers on complex technical issues, hardware replacement, and TAC support.
- Troubleshoot based on NOC alarm information and field observations.
- Receive and action fault tickets while providing timely field updates.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Update site configuration and equipment information as required.
- Submit daily field activity and fault-resolution reports.
- Prepare deployment, commissioning, and site acceptance reports.
- Maintain accurate records of site visits, faults, spares, and equipment replaced.
- Document root causes, corrective actions, and restoration details.
- Qualifications &
Experience
with mobile network operators, telecom vendors, or tower companies is an advantage.
Must be willing to travel extensively to field sites and work outside normal business hours when required.
3–6 years of practical telecom field
in RAN, transmission, site deployment, or related areas.
with Huawei, Ericsson, or Nokia RAN/Microwave equipment is preferred.
HND or Bachelor's Degree in Telecommunications, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
Required Technical Skills:
Basic knowledge of telecom DC power systems.
Practical
troubleshooting BBU, RRU/RRH, CPRI/eCPRI, and related faults.
Understanding of telecom site installation, commissioning, integration, and acceptance procedures.
Knowledge of MW parameters including RSL, BER, modulation, SNR, and link capacity.
Ability to use field test equipment and engineering tools.
Good understanding of RAN architecture and telecom site equipment.
Hands-on
with LTE/eNodeB equipment.
Ability to interpret equipment alarms and troubleshoot hardware faults.
Basic knowledge of IP, Ethernet, and transmission connectivity.
Hands-on
with Microwave transmission equipment.
Salary: N300,000 monthly.
