Chief Engineer

The Chief Engineer will lead the engineering and maintenance team, coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance, supervise contractors and technicians, and ensure compliance with hotel standards, health and safety requirements, and applicable regulations.

The role ensures that all hotel facilities operate efficiently, safely, and reliably while minimizing downtime and maintenance costs.

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the overall management, operation, maintenance, and safety of the hotel's engineering systems, equipment, facilities, and infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor hotel power supply, generators, transformers, UPS systems, and electrical distribution systems.
• Maintain swimming pool, water pumps, boilers, water treatment systems, and other utility equipment where applicable.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe engineering workshop and plant rooms.
• Ensure compliance with fire safety, occupational health and safety, environmental, and other applicable regulations.
• Supervise and coordinate engineers, technicians, electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, and other maintenance personnel.
• Maintain proper documentation for statutory inspections, certificates, licenses, and equipment servicing.
• Control the use of spare parts, tools, equipment, and engineering materials.
• Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and engineering emergencies.
• Ensure air-conditioning and ventilation systems are functioning properly throughout the hotel.
• Obtain quotations and coordinate with approved contractors and suppliers when necessary.
• Ensure all engineering work complies with approved hotel standards and safety procedures.
• Prepare annual engineering budgets and monitor maintenance-related expenses.
• Ensure emergency systems and backup facilities are regularly tested.
• Ensure the proper operation and maintenance of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, generator, water treatment, fire protection, and other building systems.
• Prepare engineering reports and submit regular maintenance reports to management.
• Conduct regular inspections of guest rooms, public areas, kitchens, laundry, plant rooms, staff areas, and other hotel facilities.
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment servicing, repairs, and spare parts.
• Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for all hotel equipment and facilities.
• Identify potential equipment failures and take preventive action before they affect hotel operations.
• Supervise contractors carrying out repairs, installations, renovations, and other engineering projects.
• Work closely with Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, Front Office, IT, Security, and other departments to resolve maintenance issues.
• Participate in hotel emergency response procedures.
• Train engineering staff on proper equipment operation, maintenance procedures, and safety practices.
• Carry out any other engineering-related duties assigned by management.
• Manage the day-to-day operations of the Engineering and Maintenance Department.
• Required Skills and Competencies
• Excellent electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, public holidays, and emergency call-outs when required.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Good budgeting and cost-control skills.
• Interested candidates should possess relevant qualifications with 10-15 years experience.
• Knowledge of plumbing and water systems.
• Strong leadership and team-management skills.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
• Strong knowledge of hotel engineering and building maintenance systems.
• Good problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
• Ability to manage contractors and external service providers.
• Ability to work under pressure and respond to emergencies.
• Good computer literacy and knowledge of maintenance management systems is an advantage.
• Good understanding of preventive and corrective maintenance.
• Knowledge of generators and electrical power distribution.
• Knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration systems.
• Ability to prepare technical and maintenance reports.
