Job Summary
The role requires someone who understands both accounting and food operations and can translate purchasing, inventory, recipes, production, wastage and sales data into actionable cost and profitability information.
We are seeking a highly analytical and commercially minded Food Cost & Cost Control Accountant to strengthen our financial and operational cost-control function.
The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring and controlling the cost of food production across Greenfield's locations and ensuring that every meal, menu, client order, function and special catering request is properly costed before production or commitment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain cost-control procedures that improve financial discipline without compromising food quality or service delivery.
- Reconcile opening stock, purchases, transfers, store issues, production and closing stock.
- Cost all client orders, functions, special orders and catering requests before production or acceptance.
- Monitor supplier price changes and assess their impact on menu and order profitability.
- Review the profitability of each major client, contract, menu and catering order.
- Identify unexplained stock losses, excessive consumption, purchasing inefficiencies and other cost leakages.
- Establish standard recipe costs, portion sizes, yields and expected food-cost percentages.
- Work closely with Finance, Procurement, Stores, Operations, Production and the Group Chef to implement cost-reduction initiatives.
- Cost every meal and menu item produced by Greenfield and maintain accurate recipe and portion cost sheets.
- Monitor food wastage, spoilage, preparation losses, cooking yield and overproduction.
- Monitor actual food cost against standard/budgeted cost and investigate significant variances.
- Calculate ingredient, packaging, labour, logistics and other direct costs applicable to each order.
- Calculate and monitor cost per meal, cost per plate and cost per client/location.
- Support the preparation of client quotations by providing accurate cost and margin analysis.
- Prepare daily, weekly and monthly cost-control reports and management dashboards.
- Review food requisitions and purchases against expected production requirements.
- Provide management with recommendations where food costs, wastage, pricing or margins fall outside approved thresholds.
- Conduct regular physical stock and cost-control audits across Greenfield locations.
- Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- 100% of quotations supported by documented cost and margin analysis.
- Inventory variance maintained within approved tolerance.
- Monthly cost-control dashboard submitted by the 3rd–5th working day.
- Cost-per-meal maintained within approved budget/target.
- 100% of significant cost variances investigated and reported.
- Food-cost variance maintained within approved tolerance.
- Monthly client/location profitability reports submitted within agreed timelines.
- 100% of meals/menu items accurately costed.
- Measurable reduction in avoidable food wastage.
- 100% of client orders and special catering requests costed before production/commitment.
- Documented cost savings and leakage prevention initiatives implemented quarterly.
- Qualifications &
Experience
High attention to detail and strong commercial awareness.
Minimum 4 years' relevant accounting/cost-control experience.
B.Sc./HND in Accounting, Finance, Economics or a related discipline.
Ability to independently identify and challenge unexplained costs and operational leakages.
Strong knowledge of food costing, inventory control, standard costing and variance analysis.
Strong analytical, numerical and problem-solving skills.
Professional qualification such as ICAN/ACA, ACCA or CIMA is an advantage.
with accounting, ERP or inventory management systems.
in industrial catering, hospitality, restaurants/QSR, food manufacturing or FMCG is strongly preferred.
Strong Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, SUMIFS and financial modelling.
Ability to work with chefs, storekeepers, procurement teams and finance professionals.
Salary: N450,000 - N550,000 / month.
