Job Summary

The Director of School is the lead member of the Senior Management Team reporting directly to the Chairman of the Board of Directors through a designate or the Advisory Board.

She has the primary responsibility of designing plans, policies, and programs for the schools and in conjunction with the Heads of Units, ensuring the proper implementation of these policies and programs for the achievement of effective and quality academic excellence in the standard of education for the institution.

The role is responsible for overseeing the general day-to-day administration and supervision of all aspects of the schools’ management to secure continuous improvement in teaching and pupil learning at the institution.

Key in this position is the responsibility for the overall management and coordination of the activities of all Heads of Units and ensuring that decision-making remains a collective responsibility in the schools.

The Director of School is the group accounting officer for the schools assigned.

Key Responsibilities

  • Professional Leadership
  • Take an active role in the maintenance of discipline and good order throughout the school.
  • Recruit, train and retrain qualified and experienced professional educators who will groom world-class leaders.
  • Work in cooperation with the Chairman of the Board of Directors, the Board of Directors, Heads of Schools, Head of Accounts, Head of Audit, and Head of Academics towards proposals and changes that will ensure and enhance organizational efficiency.
  • Identify critical skill requirements for 21st-century teaching and educational leadership.
  • Mediate and arbitrate on issues affecting the schools with a view to eliminating crisis.
  • Build a cohesive system within the schools so that members work together as a team or a family.
  • Develop and implement a Strategic Master Plan and Direction with stakeholders and role players.
  • Develop, nurture, and supervise a culture of quality and academic excellence in the institution and the institution Pre-Degree College with stakeholders and players.
  • Coach and mentor employees.
  • Conduct research on best practices in education, monitor activities and developments in other schools, and introduce innovations that can be adopted at the institution.
  • Initiate ideas that will foster educational growth and development and ensure that high academic performances are maintained, client loyalty is sustained and public trust/confidence in institution schools is assured.
  • Supervise the maintenance of effective and efficient liaison with the State and Federal Ministries of Education, West African Examinations Council, National Examinations Council, Cambridge Assessment International Examinations, other accreditation/regulatory bodies, and other agencies of education on matters affecting institution Schools.
  • Oversee and supervise the national and international Accreditation Standards and ensure they are implemented and executed in the Strategy and Direction of every institution School and the institution Pre-Degree College.
  • Implement an Accounting Model (System) for institution Schools and the institution Pre-Degree College, based on national and international Accounting Standards, Principles, and best accounting practices for financial analysis, planning, and control.
  • Ensure a priority focus on Child Protection and Safeguarding policy to ensure that every learner and all stakeholders operate in a safe and secure environment within and outside all institution institutions.
  • Personnel & Administrative Management
  • Ensure the efficient and effective day-to-day operations of institution Schools and institution Pre-Degree College by making regular visits to all the institution Schools for effective administration and supervision.
  • Ensure that a high level of discipline is maintained among staff and learners in all the Schools.
  • Promote good moral conduct and hard work in academic activities among staff and learners.
  • Ensure effective management and judicious use of School facilities, resources, supplies, and equipment.
  • Plan for the maintenance of, and expansion of existing infrastructure.
  • Attract and retain high-caliber personnel and supervise a well-structured Mandatory Continuous Professional Development Training (MCPDT) for all cadres of Staff for the effective performance of teaching and non-teaching staff.
  • Ensure resources are deployed efficiently and effectively to meet specific objectives in line with the school’s strategic plan and financial context.
  • Total School Administration and Records (Electronic Administrative Systems).
  • Responsible for asset management (Stock Control).
  • Performance Management & Assessment
  • Provide report to the Chairman and Board on matters concerning the overall learners and school’s outcomes and teacher performance data, measuring attainment vis-a-viz set targets.
  • Secure and sustain effective teaching and learning throughout the schools and monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and standards of learners’ achievement, using benchmarks and setting targets for improvement. Develop the process of evaluation (performance appraisal) of the staff to promote growth.
  • Review areas for Staff development and approve training programs.
  • Promote the welfare of staff and learners by providing inducements and motivating conditions under which they can operate and make their fullest contributions to the schools.
  • Curriculum Development
  • Ensure that all students receive a good quality education through programs designed to promote a stimulating style of learning in a safe and healthy school environment.
  • Ensure quality Assurance of the Academic Programme (including all other activities: Sports, Cultural, Social and Co-Curricular and Extra-Curricular Activities) in each school.
  • Lead the drive to strategically develop and fully integrate best practice technology in education in institution Schools.
  • Provide support for Heads of schools to be able to determine, organize and implement a diverse, flexible curriculum and implement an effective assessment framework.
  • Keep informed of modern theories and methodology in education, especially those relating to learning styles, teaching methods, and twenty-first century education.
  • Oversight function on Assessment Policy (Test and Examinations) in institution schools.
  • Communication & Relationship Management
  • Develop innovative marketing programs to secure a continuous increase in enrolment in each institution School.
  • Initiate periodic market research and seek feedback on brand perception from various stakeholders.
  • Improve the enrollment in all the schools by introducing a customer-focused culture and continuously improve the systems to support smooth business operations.
  • Provide monthly reports to the Chairman and Board of Directors or their designate.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Board of Directors, the Advisory Board, and any other designate.
  • Responsible for payroll administration by advising the accounts department on staff salaries, allowances, promotions, and appointments.
  • Responsible for collating the monthly report on the returns attained monthly from all units and reports to the Board of Directors.
  • New staff orientation program management and exit interview process management.
  • Staff redeployment/transfer.
  • Liaise with other functional/departmental managers to ensure they are fully informed of HR objectives, purpose, and achievements.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Educational Management, Educational Administration, or a related discipline.
  • Master’s Degree in Education, Educational Management, Educational Administration, or a related field is highly preferred.
  • Relevant professional certifications in Educational Leadership or School Management will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 15 years’ experience in whole-school management, covering both academic leadership and school operations.
  • Proven experience in senior educational leadership, with responsibility for academic excellence, administration, staff management, curriculum development, student welfare, and operational performance.
  • Experience managing and coordinating Heads of Schools/Units and multidisciplinary teams within a structured educational institution.
  • Strong track record in strategic planning, performance management, quality assurance, accreditation, safeguarding, stakeholder management, and continuous school improvement.
  • Previous experience in a Director of School, Head of School, Principal, School Administrator, or equivalent senior leadership position is required.
