Job Description
- Perform in-depth analysis of molecular data, including sequencing and real-time PCR data.
- Handle biological samples, ensuring proper storage, documentation, and adherence to chain-of-custody protocols.
- Ensure accuracy, reproducibility, and compliance with national and international standards (e.g., ISO 15189) when implementing new tests.
- Adhere to quality control procedures to ensure accurate results in molecular testing.
- Participate in internal and external quality assessment programs (EQA/IQA) to maintain high testing standards.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards such as ISO 15189, ISO 17025, MLSCN or other accreditation bodies.
- Maintain a clean and organized reception area to minimize the risk of sample contamination or mix-up.
- Ensure sample integrity from collection to analysis, including proper labelling, tracking, and storage.
- Analyse genetic material from biological samples (e.g., blood, tissue, hair, or forensic samples) to detect mutations, viruses, bacteria, or other genetic traits.
- Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and coordinate with technical support or service engineers when needed.
- Perform molecular diagnostic techniques such as PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), qPCR, DNA/RNA extraction, sequencing, gel electrophoresis, and genotyping.
- Develop, optimize, and validate new molecular assays and protocols for diagnostic or research purposes.
- Prepare samples for testing by performing preliminary processing (e.g., aliquoting, centrifuging, or homogenizing).
- Conduct regular quality control checks on equipment, reagents, and procedures.
- Utilize bioinformatics tools to interpret large datasets, especially in genomic sequencing or DNA profiling projects.
- Keep up to date with the latest advancements in molecular biology technologies and integrate them into the lab.
- Collaborate with bioinformatics teams to analyse complex datasets for comprehensive analysis.
- Interpret test results and prepare detailed technical reports
- Ensure that high-risk or biohazardous samples are handled according to safety protocols to prevent contamination and ensure lab safety.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain specialized molecular biology equipment such as real-time PCR machines, sequencers, centrifuges, and spectrophotometers.
- Academic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (Minimum of Second Class Upper) in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Medical Lab Scientist.
- Working Experience:
- Entry Level: Minimun of 1 - 2 years of experience in laboratory processes.
- A laboratory environment (Analyst or Laboratory Technologist).
Knowledge and Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and general computer applications
- Willingness and ability to learn and apply new concepts quickly.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Good knowledge of molecular diagnostic techniques such as PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), qPCR, DNA/RNA extraction, sequencing, gel electrophoresis, and genotyping.
- Strong report writing and documentation skills
