Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Objective

The role holder will support the daily management of the ICU, perform advanced procedures, participate in multidisciplinary teamwork, and contribute to teaching, quality improvement, and research initiatives.

The Junior Consultant, Intensivist will be responsible for providing high-quality, evidence-based critical care to patients under the supervision of the Consultant Anaesthetist.

Key Accountabilities/

Responsibilities

• Clinical Patient Management:
• Assist the Consultant Anaesthetist in leading daily multidisciplinary ICU rounds, contributing to the development and implementation of evidence-based management plans.
• Independently manage a defined caseload of critically ill patients under supervision, including those with severe sepsis, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), multi-organ failure, and post-operative complications.
• Ensure timely, accurate, and complete documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR), including daily progress notes, procedure notes, and discharge summaries.
• Prescribe and adjust complex pharmacological regimens (vasoactive drugs, sedatives, analgesics, antimicrobials) following approved protocols and in consultation with senior staff.
• Perform and document comprehensive daily patient assessments, including history taking, physical examination, and interpretation of laboratory and radiological data.
• Lead rapid response teams and code blue events under the guidance of the Consultant Anaesthetist, demonstrating proficiency in advanced life support.
• Procedural Expertise and Safety:
• Adhere strictly to infection control and sterile techniques, actively participating in CLABSI and VAP prevention bundles.
• Manage complications during procedures, seeking immediate senior support when required, and documenting all events thoroughly.
• Assist in advanced procedures such as percutaneous tracheostomy, bronchoscopy, and point-of-care ultrasound (echocardiography, lung ultrasound, FAST exams).
• Maintain proficiency in mechanical ventilation (invasive and non-invasive), renal replacement therapy (CRRT), and hemodynamic monitoring systems.
• Perform a range of invasive procedures independently, including central venous catheterization, arterial line insertion, endotracheal intubation, chest tube insertion, and lumbar puncture, under the supervision of the Consultant Anaesthetist.
• Ensure pre-procedure checks, equipment readiness, and post-procedure monitoring are completed per safety protocols.
• Collaboration and Communication
• :
• Escalate clinical concerns or deteriorating patient conditions promptly to the Consultant Anaesthetist or senior intensivist on duty.
• Facilitate seamless handovers between shifts using standardized communication tools (e.g., SBAR), ensuring continuity of care.
• Participate in daily huddles and multidisciplinary team meetings to align care plans and address operational issues.
• Collaborate respectfully with ICU nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other allied health professionals to optimize patient outcomes.
• Communicate daily with patients’ families, providing clear updates on clinical status, prognosis, and care plans, and participate in formal family meetings to discuss goals of care.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for referring physicians, emergency department staff, and ward teams regarding patient admissions, transfers, and step-down planning.
• Quality Assurance and Clinical Governance:
• Lead or co-lead at least one clinical audit per year, presenting findings to the department and implementing actionable improvements.
• Report critical incidents, near misses, and adverse events via the hospital’s incident reporting system, and participate in root cause analysis as assigned.
• Contribute to the review and update of clinical protocols, such as sedation weaning, delirium management, and sepsis bundles.
• Ensure compliance with international patient safety goals (e.g., WHO Surgical Safety Checklist, hand hygiene, medication reconciliation).
• Monitor and promote appropriate use of blood products, antibiotics, and laboratory testing to reduce waste and harm.
• Actively participate in the ICU’s quality improvement program, including data collection for clinical audits (e.g., mortality, readmission, infection rates).
• Teaching, Training, and Mentorship:
• Provide bedside teaching and clinical supervision to senior residents, residents, interns, and medical students rotating through the ICU.
• Assess and document the clinical competencies of trainees, offering constructive feedback to support their professional development.
• Foster a learning environment by encouraging questions, evidence-based discussions, and reflective practice.
• Assist in the orientation and onboarding of new ICU medical staff and rotating residents.
• Deliver formal teaching sessions (e.g., case presentations, journal clubs, simulation-based training) for the multidisciplinary team on topics such as airway management, sepsis, or ventilator management.
• Maintain own continuing medical

Education

(CME) credits and assist in organizing departmental CME activities (e.g., grand rounds, morbidity & mortality conferences).

Research and Professional Development:

Stay current with emerging evidence in critical care by regularly reviewing journals (e.g., Critical Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine) and attending webinars or conferences.

Develop and lead a small-scale research project or quality improvement initiative under mentorship, aiming for presentation at a local or national conference.

Present research findings or interesting cases at departmental meetings and national/international conferences as opportunities arise.

Contribute to the development of research protocols, case reports, or review articles for publication.

Support ongoing clinical research projects led by senior consultants, including patient recruitment, data collection, and ethics submissions.

Education, Skills and Competencies

Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team, support daily rounds, resolve conflicts, and build trust with nursing and allied health staff.

Proficient in advanced airway management, including direct and video laryngoscopy, endotracheal intubation, and assisting with percutaneous tracheostomy.

Possession of Board certification or completion of residency training in a related base specialty such as Internal Medicine, Anaesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, or Pulmonary Medicine.

Demonstrated knowledge of quality improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma, PDSA) and a commitment to using data to improve patient safety and clinical outcomes, including participation in audits and incident reporting.

Certification in Critical Care Medicine (fellowship or postgraduate diploma) from recognized health authorities.

Capacity to make complex, time-sensitive decisions regarding patient care, including recognition of clinical deterioration, appropriate escalation to senior staff, and participation in goals of care and end-of-life discussions.

Ability to lead and manage medical emergencies, including cardiac arrest (ACLS/ALS certified), septic shock, anaphylaxis, and massive transfusion protocols under consultant supervision.

Ability to communicate complex and often distressing medical information to patients and their families with empathy, clarity, and cultural sensitivity.

Current and valid medical license to practice.

Competent in performing and interpreting point-of-care ultrasound (e.g., Focused Cardiac Ultrasound, lung ultrasound, FAST exams, and vascular access guidance).

Medical Degree (MD or equivalent) from an accredited institution.

Expertise in inserting and managing central venous catheters, arterial lines, and temporary hemodialysis catheters (non-tunnelled).

Must have 1-to-3 year post fellowship

Experience

Ability to manage advanced mechanical ventilation (invasive and non-invasive) and renal replacement therapy (CRRT), including basic troubleshooting.

Ability to support leadership of a multidisciplinary team, delegate tasks appropriately to junior residents and nurses, and promote a culture of mutual respect and psychological safety.
