Established in 2023 and approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the institution is named after Bishop Joseph Shanahan, a legendary missionary educator who profoundly shaped the landscape of western
in southeastern Nigeria. The university was founded by the Metropolitan Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Maduka Okeke, and officially launched its inaugural academic operations for the 2024 / 2025 session.
