Job Objective
The role holder will oversee the medical aspects of occupational health programs, manage complex cases, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide authoritative guidance on workplace health hazards.
The Occupational Health Physician will be responsible for providing strategic medical leadership and clinical expertise to safeguard the health, safety, and well-being of all AMCE employees.
Key Accountabilities/
Responsibilities
- Clinical Occupational Health Services:
- Provide immediate medical management for occupational exposures (e.g., needlesticks, chemical splashes).
- Diagnose and manage work-related illnesses and injuries, including complex and chronic cases.
- Lead clinical response to workplace medical emergencies.
- Advise on fitness-for-duty and work restrictions/accommodations.
- Oversee medical surveillance programs for employees exposed to specific hazards.
- Review pre-placement health assessments and periodic evaluations for employees in high-risk roles.
- Medical Leadership & Program Strategy:
- Develop and revise medical protocols and procedures for occupational health conditions.
- Provide medical direction for the entire occupational health service, setting clinical standards.
- Integrate occupational health strategy with the hospital's overall safety and business continuity plans.
- Champion a data-driven approach to preventing workplace illness and injury.
- Represent the medical voice of occupational health in hospital committees.
- Advise hospital leadership on the medical implications of workplace policies and emerging health risks.
- Regulatory Compliance & Medical Ethics:
- Stay abreast of evolving legislation and best practices in occupational medicine.
- Provide expert medical testimony in legal proceedings related to workers' compensation or disability.
- Serve as the primary medical authority during internal and external audits and inspections.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and ethical standards in handling sensitive employee health information.
- Monitor and interpret health and safety regulations and ensure compliance.
- Advise on specific service issues such as Drug and Alcohol Testing; Legislative update and interpretation; Employment and Health Matters.
- Ensure informed consent and ethical conduct in all health surveillance activities.
- Disability & Case Management:
- Minimize lost work time and associated costs through proactive medical case management.
- Develop individualized rehabilitation plans for employees with prolonged work-related disabilities.
- Analyze disability data to identify trends and implement targeted prevention strategies.
- Collaborate with HR, managers, and insurers to facilitate effective case resolution.
- Liaise with HR in the management of complex workers' compensation claims and disability cases.
- Advise on return-to-work readiness, specifying necessary accommodations.
- Health Risk Assessment & Hazard Control:
- Conduct advanced risk assessments for chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic workplace hazards.
- Provide authoritative medical guidance on the selection and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Advise on ergonomic improvements to reduce the risk of injuries.
- Review and approve health risk assessments for new equipment, processes, or chemicals.
- Advise the Infection Control team on occupational aspects of infectious disease management.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of engineering and administrative controls from a medical perspective.
- Lead epidemiological investigations into clusters of employee illness or exposure.
- Emergency Preparedness & Business Continuity:
- Validate the medical components of the hospital's business continuity plan.
- Act as the medical incident commander for occupational health emergencies.
- Ensure the availability and medical efficacy of emergency supplies, including antidotes and vaccines.
- Provide medical oversight in the development of emergency response plans for pandemics and other crises.
- Train key personnel on the medical management of mass casualty events within the workplace.
- Lead the medical debrief and analysis following emergency drills or real incidents.
- Data Analysis & Strategic Reporting:
- Interpret complex health data to provide strategic recommendations to hospital leadership.
- Oversee the analysis of occupational health data (injury rates, illness trends, exposure incidents).
- Use data analytics to forecast health risks and justify proactive interventions.
- Author comprehensive quarterly and annual reports on the state of employee health and program efficacy.
- Ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and security of all electronic occupational health records.
- Benchmark the hospital's occupational health performance against international best practices.
Qualifications
Experience
with electronic health records and occupational health data analytics
Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) Degree from an accredited institution
Fellowship qualification in Family Medicine.
Proficiency in disability case management and workers' compensation systems
Valid medical license to practice.
Advanced knowledge of occupational health regulations (OSHA, ISO 45001, ILO standards)
Professional certification in Occupational Health Medicine.
Knowledge of epidemiology and health surveillance methodologies.
Expertise in workplace hazard control (chemical, biological, physical, ergonomic, psychological)
Board certification or equivalent in Occupational Medicine
