Job Title: Project / Site Surveyor

Location: Akwa Ibom

Job Summary

The Project/Site Surveyor is responsible for providing accurate surveying and setting-out services for the Company’s construction projects. The role involves establishing survey control points, setting out building and civil works, monitoring elevations, coordinates and alignment, interpreting construction drawings, taking field measurements and providing accurate survey data to guide construction activities.

The Surveyor works closely with the Project Manager, Site Engineers, Architects, Quantity Surveyors, contractors and other project personnel to ensure that construction works are executed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, dimensions and levels.

Key Responsibilities

• Establishment of Survey Control:
• Establish and maintain site survey control points, benchmarks and reference grids.
• Ensure all project survey activities are referenced to approved control points.
• Maintain accurate records of established control points.
• Verify existing coordinates and benchmarks before commencement of works.
• Site Setting-Out:
• Confirm all setting-out works before construction proceeds.
• Set out structural and architectural elements accurately on site.
• Set out building foundations, columns, walls, roads, drainage and other construction elements.
• Establish grid lines and building positions from approved drawings.
• Levels and Elevations:
• Check foundation levels, floor levels, structural levels and external works.
• Monitor slopes and gradients for roads, drainage and other civil works.
• Establish and monitor site levels and elevations.
• Immediately report discrepancies in levels or elevations.
• Interpretation of Drawings:
• Translate design information into accurate site setting-out requirements.
• Identify discrepancies between drawings and actual site conditions.
• Review architectural, structural and civil engineering drawings.
• Liaise with the relevant consultants where clarification is required.
• Construction Monitoring:
• Conduct routine checks on structural elements during construction.
• Report deviations and recommend corrective action.
• Verify that completed works correspond with approved drawings.
• Monitor the position, alignment, dimensions and elevation of ongoing construction works.
• Structural Setting-Out:
• Provide survey confirmation before critical construction activities proceed.
• Set out columns, beams, walls, foundations and other structural elements.
• Monitor structural elements at different construction stages.
• Check verticality, alignment and positioning of structural components.
• External and Civil Works:
• Establish required gradients and levels for civil works.
• Set out roads, walkways, drainage systems, culverts and other external works.
• Conduct as-built surveys upon completion.
• Monitor alignment and elevations throughout execution.
• Field Measurements and Data Collection:
• Process field data and prepare required survey outputs.
• Record coordinates, distances, angles, levels and other relevant information.
• Maintain accurate field books and digital records.
• Conduct accurate field measurements and collect survey data.
• As-Built Surveys:
• Prepare as-built drawings and survey information.
• Ensure final survey records accurately reflect the completed project.
• Conduct as-built surveys for completed construction works.
• Record the actual location, dimensions and levels of completed works.
• Survey Equipment Management:
• Operate total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, automatic/digital levels and other surveying instruments.
• Conduct routine equipment checks before use.
• Report faults and calibration requirements promptly.
• Ensure survey equipment is properly maintained and protected.
• Quality Control:
• Identify survey errors and construction deviations early.
• Conduct independent survey checks on critical construction activities.
• Support the project team in maintaining required construction standards.
• Verify accuracy before and during execution of major works.
• Coordination with Site Team:
• Coordinate setting-out activities with the construction programme.
• Provide survey information required for construction planning.
• Work closely with Site Engineers, Project Managers, Architects, Quantity Surveyors and contractors.
• Attend site coordination meetings where survey input is required.
• Quantity and Measurement Support:
• Provide survey data required for project valuation and reporting.
• Support measurement of earthworks, excavation, filling and other relevant activities.
• Provide accurate measurements required by the Quantity Surveyor and project team.
• Assist in verifying dimensions and quantities of completed works where required.
• Earthworks and Excavation:
• Monitor excavation depths and formation levels.
• Carry out setting-out and level checks for excavation works.
• Establish cut-and-fill levels where applicable.
• Provide accurate survey information for earthwork activities.
• Survey Reports and Documentation:
• Submit reports promptly to the Project Manager.
• Maintain field notes, survey records, drawings and measurement data.
• Prepare daily, weekly and project survey reports as required.
• Document all survey checks and identified deviations.
• Site Inspection and Verification:
• Confirm critical dimensions and coordinates.
• Escalate unresolved technical issues to the Project Manager.
• Conduct routine site inspections to verify construction positioning and levels.
• Inspect completed works before subsequent construction activities commence.
• Contractor and Subcontractor Coordination:
• Monitor survey-related activities carried out by contractors.
• Verify contractor survey work where necessary.
• Provide setting-out information to contractors and subcontractors.
• Ensure external survey activities are coordinated with the Company’s project requirements.
• Safety and Site Compliance:
• Comply with the Company's health and safety procedures.
• Maintain safe working practices when conducting field surveys.
• Use appropriate PPE when working on construction sites.
• Report unsafe conditions observed during surveying activities.
• Supervision of Junior Survey Staff:
• Supervise Junior Surveyors, Survey Technicians and Survey Assistants.
• Allocate field assignments and review completed work.
• Ensure survey activities are completed accurately and on schedule.
• Train junior staff on proper survey procedures and equipment use.
• General Project Support:
• Participate in project planning and technical meetings when required.
• Support special surveys and investigations assigned by management.
• Provide technical survey advice to the project team.
• Perform other duties related to surveying and construction activities as assigned.
• Qualifications & Requirements
• Education:
• BSc/HND in Surveying, Surveying & Geoinformatics, Geomatics or a related discipline.
• Professional registration with the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON) is an advantage and required where the position involves professional surveying practice. SURCON identifies registered persons as Surveyors and regulates the practice of surveying in Nigeria.

Experience

5–8 years relevant experience in construction surveying.

Strong experience in setting-out, levelling, coordinates and construction monitoring.

Experience on major construction projects is an advantage.

Proven experience working on building and/or civil construction projects.

Experience with Total Station, GPS/GNSS and Auto Level.

Experience working with architectural, structural and civil engineering drawings.
