Federal College of Education (Technical) - There was dire need to educate and produce technical teachers in Nigeria after the termination, in September 1967, of the Special Fund Project of the International Labor Organization (ILO) for the training of Technical / Vocational educators. This need was earlier highlighted in the Gailers’ Report of August 1964 titled “a National Plan for the Development of Technical Education in the Federal Republic of Nigeria”. The report emphasized that the establishment of a Technical Teacher Education institution was for effective manpower development of technology in Nigeria. Thus, the Federal Government established the National Technical Teachers College (NTTC) Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, as the first Technical Teacher Education institution in the country to award Technical Teachers’ Certificate (TTC) for professionals in commercial and technical education.
In 1982, the name of the College was changed to Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, due to the expansion in curricular and courses being offered. That is with inclusion of Nigeria Certificate in Education NCE (T) programmes, the College became a full-fledge autonomous academic institution in 1986 with the promulgation of the Federal College of Education Decree No 4 of 1986 and as amended in 1993.
The 8th Governing Council of the Federal College of Education (Technical) hereby invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the position below:
Job Title: Provost
Location: Akoka-Yaba, Lagos
Key Accountabilities
- The Provost is the Chief Executive of the College and is charged with the responsibility of matters relating to the day-to-day management and operations of the College.
- A successful candidate would be expected to provide the required Academic, Administrative and Professional leadership for the College in executing the broad policies laid down by the Governing Council for the achievement of the objectives for which the Institution was established.
- Among others, some specific duties of the Provost include being:
- A person to foster good rapport with relevant Government organs such as: the Federal Ministry of Education (FME), National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and other Government agencies / professional bodies that would ultimately lead to the attainment of the College's objectives.
- The Chairman of the Academic Board that directs and oversees academic activities of the College;
- A member of the Governing Council of the College in charge of providing periodic reports on the progress of the College in terms of personnel, finances, infrastructure and ensuring that the decisions of Councils are carried out promptly;
- Responsible for approving and authorizing all payments and expenditures of the College in accordance with the financial regulations, treasury circulars and Governing Council's decisions and directives under sound financial discipline and management;
- The Chief Academic, Administrative and Accounting officer of the College;
- Responsible for ensuring meetings of Council and its Committees are serviced, etc; and
Qualifications
- Candidates must possess a minimum of fifteen (15) years post qualification teaching / research experience in a College of Education system; and in addition, must have held a senior teaching / research and top administration post in a College of Education system as evidence of ability to manage human and material resources.
- Candidates must be a Chief Lecturer with at least five (5) years cognate experience.
- Evidence of Community Service both local and National Development, and
- Candidates must show evidence of good track record in result-orientated researches, high National and International status in his / her research achievements, as evident in scholarly publications.
- Possession of a Professional Teaching qualification, a minimum of Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) or Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), in addition to a professional teaching registration as a Professional Teaching with TRCN are mandatory.
- Candidates must be of good conduct and character.
- Candidates must not be above the age of Fifty-nine (59) years at the time of taking up the appointment.
- For a Technical College, such qualification must be in the area of Science or Technical / Vocational Education.
- He / she should be a registered and active member of a Professional Association in the field of Education.
- Possess sense of discipline, dedication, drive and resourcefulness and be able to command the respect and loyalty of members of staff and students of the College.
- Candidates should possess a Doctorate Degree (Ph.D.) from a recognized university in a field relevant to at least one programme in the College.
- Candidates must be a man / woman of vision, a goal-getter, and one that can execute a strategic plan for the College.
- He / she must be somebody who is not likely to foster personal, social, ethnic, political, religious and other sectional interests.
- Candidates must be proficient in Information Communication Technology packages and capacities.

- The appointment is for a tenure of Five (5) years;
- Salary / Remunerations are as contained in the Conditions of Service for Provosts of Federal Colleges of Education in Nigeria, and may be determined by Government policies from time to time.
